| es_EC |

| dc.description.abstract-en | Introduction: The placenta is an organ that enables the proper development of the product of conception. Its dysfunction may lead to fetal complications, intrauterine growth restriction, and maternal complications such as preeclampsia. Objective: To differentiate placental morphometry and neonatal conditions according to the ethnicity of pregnant women in two hospitals in Imbabura, Ecuador. Methods: A non-experimental, correlational, descriptive, and cross-sectional study was conducted in two groups of women with full-term, uncomplicated pregnancies. Pregnant women treated at the Hospital of Ibarra belonged to different ethnic groups, whereas those treated at the Hospital of Otavalo were exclusively Indigenous. Socioeconomic status stratification was obtained using a survey from the National Institute of Statistics and Census (INEC). Anthropometric and morphometric measurements were obtained using digital electronic scales and measuring tapes. Results: Lower-middle socioeconomic status predominated. APGAR scores were within normal ranges. Oval-shaped placental discs were predominant, mainly identified in Otavaleño mothers. Placental size in both hospitals was elevated, suggesting a potential reduction in placental reserves as well as suboptimal fetal growth. Conclusions: Despite the elevated placental ratios observed, the neonates in this study were within normal parameters regarding anthropometry and APGAR scores. | es_EC |
