| dc.description.abstract-en | Breast cancer is a disease with high prevalence and is the most common cause of death among women. It has a negative emotional impact, leading patients to adopt coping strategies in response to stressors that affect their quality of life. Objective: To determine the stress factors and coping strategies in patients treated for breast cancer in Specialized Units in Ecuador. Methods: This study had a quantitative, non-experimental, descriptive, and cross-sectional design. The population consisted of patients with breast cancer treated in two Specialized Oncology Units in Ecuador during the period January–June 2022. A non-probabilistic convenience sample of 39 women was selected. The Perceived Stress Questionnaire and the Stress Coping Questionnaire were applied to participants who met the diagnostic criteria and agreed to participate in the study. Results: The predominant age range was 30–39 years. Most participants were mestizo, Ecuadorian, married, had completed secondary education, were unemployed, and lived in urban areas. Identified stress factors included irritability (51.3%), fatigue (59%), restlessness (43%), mental exhaustion (48.7%), lack of social acceptance, feelings of isolation (43.6%), discouragement (64%), and frustration (46%), which were attributed to the disease. Coping strategies included emotional expression, seeking social support, and religious coping. Conclusions: Breast cancer generates stress factors and vulnerability, leading patients to develop different coping strategies to face the disease. These strategies involve personal, social, emotional, economic, and religious relationships. | es_EC |
